Library

I've decided to make this a list of books I've read recently. For samples of my own work, go to my business site Quantum Content.

Ok, the most recent ones are at the top:

Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident

A sequel that's better than the original. The writing is better crafted and the characters are more rounded.

Favorite Moment: Executing the ultimate plan to save dad.

Artemis Fowl

Billed as a kid's book but highly entertaining. After all, the main character is an evil genius at the age of twelve.

Favorite Part: From an old policeman: "I'll make up for my age with a really big gun."

Good to Great

If you're in business (or building organizations of any kind) you must read... or listen... to this book.

Favorite Part: Two things. The simple fact that this is a business/leadership book based on serious empirical data, not just anecdotes. And the question/answer bit at the end of the audio book version.

Brag!

A book about marketing yourself.

Favorite Part: The twelve questions to ask yourself to get you started writing your brag bag.

Divided in Death

Somehow I got started out on a long, long roadtrip once without any audio books. I picked this one up from the "wide selection" at a friendly truck stop.

Favorite Bit: I guess some of the descriptions of the house. Rex Stout she's not.

Where There's A Will

I fell in love with Nero Wolfe from the short-lived television series. Ever since then when I need a good book I pick up one of these mysteries.

Favorite Moment: Wolf's hasty exit and how long it takes Archie to figure out what just happened.

Killing Monsters

I don't care who you are - you must read this book. Absolutely must. It asks and answers the question of why kids like violent entertainment and how adults should react to it.

Favorite Part: The whole thing. It tackles everything from cartoon violence to first-person shooter video games. I'm now convinced that kids - and I - need this kind of entertainment.

The Story of Writing

I was looking in the library for books about violence in the media and found this nearby on the shelf. It's dodgy in spots but good enough to keep me reading and start looking for better books on the same subject.

Favorite Part: Good explanations about the history of alphabets and phonetic charts for some ancient scripts.

The Bad Beginning

I had heard great things about this series so I gave the first one a try. It was okay, but I haven't exactly rushed to get the second.

Favorite moment: ummm... the author's name? The title? I'm reaching here.

The Thin Man

I loved the movie and heard mixed reviews of the book - so had to find out for myself.

Favorite part: Chapter 22 - it's a work of art. The man could write. It's a funny, funny book and those who think otherwise are mistaken.

Lullaby

Not a book for the faint of heart. Recommended by a friend of mine for its style.

Favorite bit: (spoiler) Finding out Helen is an international assassin - esp. the bit about security not mattering.

Naked Once More

My sister recommended this one.

Favorite Moment: All of Jaquelin's interactions with Marjorie.

Banquets of the Black Widowers

I only recently rediscovered that Asimov wrote pure mysteries too.

Favorite Part: "We mostly have to deal with normal people all the time. It wouldn't be fair. But once a month we can let loose."

Good Omens

A classic it took me a long time to get around to reading. Thanks to the friends who urged me to get to it sooner rather than later.

Favorite bit: The running gag about cassette tapes all turning into Queen if left in a car too long.
